Petra Day Tour
Get ready for our adventure in the spectacular city of Petra, Jordan’s noteworthy landmark!
Considered one of the new seven wonders of the world, Petra will never fail to amaze you. It has been a top tourist attraction since its discovery by Jean Louis Burckhardt, the Swiss explorer, over 200 years ago. Upon our 2.5-hour drive from Amman, you will be rewarded with the most extraordinary archaeological city, housing more than 800 excavated sites. Step back in time to the ancient Nabatean Kingdom as you stroll up and down the preserved rock city.
So, what do we know exactly about this ancient city? – Petra was the ancestral capital of the Nabataean Kingdom, as well as being a significant trading outpost in this region. The Nabataeans established a network of caravan routes to bring spices, gold, silver, and more from India for their trade. This kingdom was so powerful and wealthy that they adorned the city with outstanding temples, arches, and palaces. Unfortunately, the emergence of sea trade routes, followed by an earthquake, led to the abundance of this enchanting place.
Put on your comfortable shoes because it’s time to explore the imposing city! Offering such a unique experience, it’s easy to get lost in its beauty. Upon your entrance, you will be stunned by the mysterious Djinn Blocks, the earliest tombs in Petra, believed to represent the Nabataean God, Dushara. Then, you will come across the carved façade of the Obelisk Tomb, a fine tomb with four pyramidal obelisks.
Make your way through the Siq Entrance, a 1-kilometer-long canyon with vibrant colors and unrivaled rock formations. Don’t rush towards Petra, leaving all this glory behind. Have a look along the walls to view the remains of the ancient channels that used to supply Petra with water. Take your time to admire the beautiful stone blocks, covered with sacred carvings, called baetyl. These artifacts and inscriptions may indicate that Petra was a holy city and a prominent religious center. Of course, the relief sculpture of camels, along with their merchants, will capture your attention.
Reaching the end of the Siq, you will get a glimpse of the famous Rose City, the unmistakable Treasury, also known as Al-Khazneh. Get lost in the half-built, half-carved city as you marvel at the iconic mix of natural and man-made architecture. Stand in awe in front of the mighty temple, carved out of pink and red rocks. You have the option to explore the wondrous spot on foot or enjoy a horse ride. Is this place starting to look familiar? – If you’re an Indiana Jones fan, you might have noticed this area in one of the movies.
With so much to see, it can be overwhelming. You are lucky we are here to help!
Wander around the tombs and houses lying on the Street of Facades, visit the Theater, and have a walk along the wonderful Colonnaded Street. Climb the steep steps to the top of the Jebel Madbah Mountain and you will be greeted by breathtaking views at the High Place of Sacrifice. It was mainly the site of animal sacrifice to please the Nabataean God, Dushara. If you’re up to a little adventure, make your way up the 850 rock-steps of the legendary monastery, used for sacred ceremonies. The trail will take you to a stunning viewpoint, giving you a panoramic view of Wadi Araba and Jebel Haroun. If you’re not much of a hiker, admire the Monastery’s Hellenistic façade, particularly spectacular when bathing in the glorious sunlight.
With so many historical tombs and ravishing sites, Petra is a real treat to explore! Just one piece of advice, start your visit early in the morning to avoid the massive crowds. That way you will have plenty of time to explore and snap marvelous photos of the different sites. And, if you thought Petra was charming enough during the day, wait until you see it during the night. The Petra Night Show will give you a mystical experience, with the 1,500 flickering candles and looming rocks.
